RYAN BARROW
Lake Geneva, Wisconsin
Ryan Barrow is a glass artist who has spent nearly 30 years shaping a unique artistic vision through one of the world's oldest artistic mediums.
Born and currently residing in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, his professional journey began at the age of 17, when he entered a high-end glass studio as a professional studio artist. Over the next decade, he refined the specialized skills, craftsmanship, and technical understanding that would become the foundation of his career. During his years working in professional studios, Barrow became part of a select group of artists entrusted with museum-quality restoration of original works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, John La Farge, F. X. Zettler, and Frank Lloyd Wright, including historic windows, mosaics and lampshades. That experience created a deep reverence for the history, craftsmanship, and preservation of these significant works. It also marked the beginning of a larger personal ambition, to eventually make his own contribution to the world of glass and leave behind work with the same sense of permanence and significance.
Today, Barrow's work extends well beyond traditional stained glass as he steps into a modern interpretation of mosaic. His most recent works explore a range of subject matter while pushing the capabilities of glass into unexpected territory, often incorporating techniques rooted in trompe l'oeil and the visual language of painting and drawing. "I've always been interested in blurring the lines of a medium that has tangible materials like glass," he says. "Standing in front of my work, I want you to get lost visually. I want you to see the work as brushstrokes, as oil on canvas, until the right angle of light hits the glass and you rethink everything you just witnessed—now knowing the truth behind the vision." This pursuit of illusion, perception, and material transformation has become central to Barrow's contemporary practice. His work challenges the viewer's first impression, encouraging them to look closer and reconsider what they believe they are seeing.
More recently, Barrow has brought this same philosophy and craftsmanship into the automotive world through his one-of-a-kind glass sculptures. These works merge the form, lines, and artistry of iconic automobiles with the precision, craftsmanship, and technical discipline inherent to the vehicles themselves. "I have a great respect for the designers of these prestigious automobiles. To balance power and elegance, engineering and aesthetics is something I use as a foundational north star in my sculptural creative process".
